Dieter Quester and Patrick Nève were two of the few people to salvage any happiness from the ninth round of the European Touring Car Championship at Zolder in Belgium last weekend. Driving the Alpina BMW CSL, they won the 3h40m race by five laps, but even that is under dispute! Apparently they started the car by means of an external battery on the start line, and after the race, the stewards were deciding whether to allow them their victory or penalize them.

That was AFTER the race. Leyland, sad to say, were as unhappy as anyone else. After running second and fourth in the early stages, the two Jaguars were both back in the paddock after an hour and a half. Fitzpatrick/Schenken, who had been in the lead, then dropped to second, went out with a dropped valve. Rouse and Bell retired at almost the same time with a gearbox that would provide little drive.

The race marked the last appearance of the Broadspeed-prepared Jaguars.
