The “Coupes de Spa” was the warm-up for the 600 km race, which in itself was a warm-up of the 24 hours, of course! But the Group 2 and 4 field was thin as ever, Joosen giving his Production 530 some extra practice - he found himself on row one... and if the rain had continued after the start, he could even have won - now Tricot’s Pantera took over on the drying track and winning this “GP”, with Joosen second. The 600 km race had an interesting entry, not only a strong Belgian field but quite some cars from the UK and a quick Camaro from Holland. Ms. Hemmes and Jim Vermeulen arrived late, but after final practice the car was on pole. Spice/Clark (Capri) and Joosen/Andruet (BMW) followed within a second. Wauters had a mighty crash, demolishing his Commodore but he escaped with a broken nose only. Marshall (Vauxhall) jumped the start, everybody followed and race director Léon Sven just let it happen. Halfway the first lap Spice was in the lead, followed by Marshall, Vermeulen, Andruet and Berger (BMW), but soon Andruet took over with Vermeulen a close second. A rain shower at “Carriere” ended all the fun; three cars left the road, Blackburn (Capri), Lloyd (BMW) and Desoet (Vauxhall) were eliminated, Vermeulen and Martin (Capri) had to pit. Quick refuelling kept Andruet/Joosen in the lead, halfway they had a gap of 3 minutes over Berger/Paulus, Spice/Clark and Tricot/Peltier. The fight for second place was over after a puncture of Spice and Paulus had a very quick stop, fastest of the day. So a win for Joosen/Andruet, with a magnificent 7th overall for the Golf GTI of De St. Hubert/Herregods. |
