Class C and D
Dron's Broadspeed Dolomite Sprint smashed Andy Rouse's class record to take pole on 1.10,6, Marshall equalling this time in his DTV Magnum. Dron also had a few laps in the development Dolomite but he was worried by Marshall's start line speed in the five speed Magnum (with low first gear) since it was important to be in the lead at Oulton because overtaking was very difficult. Dron's Dolly featured a different clutch to facilitate a quicker getaway without clutch slip.

After waiting a long time to assemble on the grid Marshall and Dron both made good starts with the Dolly holding the inside line to be first into Old Hall after a demon, tyre smoking getaway. As they crested Deer Leap, Craft, Spice, Graham, Walkinshaw, Vince Woodman (Team Esso Uniflo Capri) and Win Percy (Samuri Capri) were in line astern Dron with Marshall racing into the pits on three cylinders after a plug lead came adrift. Lap six and with Dron unable to pull away from a tenacious Craft the Dolomite locked a wheel at Fosters and then under heavy attack once more Craft was able to get alongside at Knicker Brook. Craft took the lead on lap seven and two laps later was 1.2s ahead but at half distance his Capri rolled down the hill out of Lodge with Dron back in the lead now hounded by Spice, who made a clutch conserving start. The luckless Craft had a faulty ignition switch which he had to keep fettling for the rest of the race as the car periodically cut out. Spice set about harrying Dron with a vengeance, the two touching at Fosters at three quarters distance while Spice was nearly alongside the following lap as they chased into Old Hall. But Dron showed his maturity by hanging on in front of Spice to win by the smallest of margins and knocking two seconds off Andy Rouse's class record as well! Craft, also with a new class record, stuttered round in third place while Walkinshaw got past Graham on lap two and slowly eased away to take fourth. Behind Graham came Woodman whose new thinner AP clutch held out but his gearbox lost second gear on lap two and towards the end he was rapidly being caught by Percy and Jeff Allam (Team BP Vauxhall Magnum).

Class A and B
A bit of a surprise during practice for the other half of the Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship brigade was the speed of pole position man 17-year-old Martin Brundle, having his first international race at the wheel of the ex-Win Percy 1.6 Toyota Celica GT. Bernard Unett's indecently quick 1.3 Avenger GT was close behind while a further surprise on the front row was Richard Lloyd's VW Golf which was having only its second ever race and which utilised a new Roy Fewkes built engine after Richard damaged his first engine quite badly at Silverstone. Barrie Williams' Alfa Junior GT and Brian Muir's Renault 5 TS were next up but neither were to feature in the race as poor Whizzo could not start his engine while Muir retired early with a bad misfire.

Richard Lloyd made the best start to lead from Brundle and Unett and then a gap to Jim Burrows' fast starting Mini 1275 GT and then another gap before the Escort Sport of Wayne Wainwright and the Alfasud Ti of Rex Greenslade. Brundle took the lead on lap two as Lloyd and Unett raced side by side into Old Hall but then Lloyd spun the Golf at Fosters and the following lap Brundle spun at Cascades and then pulled off at Knicker Brook leaving Unett's Mopar Avenger with a massive lead. At quarter distance Lloyd had recaptured second place and slowly crept up on Unett to finish less than three seconds behind but Unett's new class record (breaking his year old record by three seconds no less) shows that the Chrysler man was easing off.
Alan Curnow's Patrick Motor Group Longman prepared 1275 Mini GT made a scorching start from the very back of the grid after throttle trouble during practice to lie an incredible tenth at the end of lap one; sixth by lap four; and third by lap nine, a worthy position which he held to the end. By lap sixteen Peter Hilliard's Alfetta had caught the smaller engined Alfasud of Rex Greenslade and by the penultimate lap Hilliard had struggled past and had secured fourth by a second while behind Greenslade Burrows' Mini had dropped to sixth, just staying out of the reach of Martin Williams' Toyota Celica, with Wayne Wainwright's Escort next up having waned after a good start.
