The Luigi Racing team pulled off its second ETCC win of the season at Mugello on Sunday when the UFO Jeans sponsored BMW CSL of Jean Xhenceval and Pierre Dieudonné came home three laps clear of the sister car driven by Carlo Facetti and Martino Finotto.
The result of the 100-lap, 524-kilometre race confirmed BMW's position of dominance in the manufacturers' championship while promoting Facetti into the lead of the drivers' section of the series. However, although it was undeniably a deserved victory for the Belgian team, it was also slightly hollow one.
With Leyland's withdrawal of the Jaguars before the start of practice (still working out a solution for their suspension problems), the Luigi cars had nothing to beat save each other once Dieter Quester's front-running Alpina CSL had dropped out with a blown engine at half distance.
A BMW 320i and a 2002 filled third and fourth places, finishing only 2.8s apart, so the first non-Munich built car at the end was the fifth placed VW Scirocco of Anton Stocker and Jörg Siegrist.
