The second race of the season brought us back to Europe. But still the field was poor: two Martini cars, one Kremer and two Italian 935’s - that was about it as far as competitive cars were concerned. The only consolation was a brand new Martini car, a twin-turbo engine and a new body.
The Martini drivers were in bad physical shape: all of them had some sort of disease, with Ickx worst - he had to be replaced by Barth.
The new car could qualify in front of the older sister, but not as easy as expected. Mass took the lead after the start, followed by Stommelen and Wollek. But Stommelen had a lot of understeer and had to let Wollek past.
The rain set in, Mass changing tires first, then Schurti - while Kremer kept slicks, since their Goodyear wets were considered hopeless. The unavoidable happened when Fitzpatrick was passed by Barth. But it was not to last, since Barth’s dynamo belt broke. This was replaced, and in the mean time brake pads were changed as well. Barth stormed away and was right behind Fitzpatrick, but still one lap down. After the finish straight, the brakes did not work and he slammed into the Kremer car, both cars a write-off. The brake failure was a mystery - Barth told he had pumped the brake pedal a few times.
Now Stommelen and Schurti were leading comfortably, and won the race despite the turbo boost being too high. he Jolly club car came second again followed by the other Italian 935.
After this poor race, Porsche were seriously considering to retire from the 1978 championship if no serious opposition would enter. The current season had to be finished - Martini had paid for it...
