A few DRM regulars attended the yearly field trip to South Africa. Zakspeed sent two cars, three BMW 320’s and a Schnitzer 2002 turbo. First practice saw the turbo 2002 up front, the Escorts pretty competitive and a total-loss for BMW: Stuck blew an engine and spun on his own oil. A reserve car was flown in from Munich. A new name was Markus Höttinger; he had raced in the Renault 5-cup but was 5 seconds a lap slower than the rest here. He replaced Cheever, who suffered from a broken hand.
The first heat was great; Winkelhock had a tough fight with Heyer, Hezemans and Grohs traded places 18 times in the first hour. The Schnitzer 2002 was the fastest car, but after 30 minutes the first turbo axle broke, after 2 hours the next one, and shortly after the start of heat two the engine disintegrated completely.
After one hour, Winkelhock could no longer keep up with Heyer, since his engine misfired. The search for the problem took 20 laps. Grohs ran out of fuel and pushed the car for 500 metres in the burning sun.
BMW’s hopes now lay on the Stuck/Peterson 320 which had started from the back. Since Scheckter performed weak, the BMW could take over the lead. But after four laps in heat 2, the gearbox broke.
In the end, BMW won heat 1 (Peterson/Stuck) and heat 2 (Surer/Winkelhock); but Ford won the race.
