22 cars at the start in light rain. The Martini Porsche in front, the Turbo BMW of Stuck following - until the fourth lap: Stuck brakes far too late and disappears with three layers of catch fencing. Stuck returns to the pits, reports that the cat looks “quite damaged” and both he and Peterson leave the circuit.
45 minutes later: the rain has changed into a thunderstorm and the race is red-flagged. All the teams are allowed to work on their cars, the race will be restarted while the result of the first 45 minutes will be deleted - the race will start if as nothing happened. Even the BMW can be repaired in time - but its drivers have disappeared and there’s no trace of them in this pre-cellphone time...
The start on 15:15 hour will leave only 2:45 minutes to race. The first laps are still wet, with Schurti leading in front of Mass and Wollek. Then the sun returns, and at the first pit stop for Wollek (another lost fan belt) he can change to slicks. He will finish fourth, behind Ickx/Mass, Schurti/Dören and Konrad/Jöst. Eight, and winner of the 2-litre class were Winkelhock/Walkinshaw, after an off, an oil tank repair, a broken clutch and only one forward gear left...
