Entries
The winter had been long, but now the eagerly awaited Group 5 championship took off. The entry list in division 1 was a little poor, with four of the new Porsche 935’s (for Schurti, Wollek, Neuhaus and Kannacher) and last years Kremer car for Konrad. The rest of the field were 934/5’s and a few other cars. Of this bunch, only Schurti and Wollek could be considered as top entries.
Division 2 looked far better. BMW had delivered many kits to private teams (a feat which would be repeated in the future) and entered three cars themselves, with juniors Cheever, Surer and Winkelhock - the latter, Scirocco cup winner 1976 (at least winner of the final race!) with semi works status, since he had to get a little sponsorship and had to build the car himself. Further 320’s were entered by Faltz (Grohs), Hohmann (Bienefeld), GS (Obermoser), Heidegger (Schneeberger) and Andreas Schall. Escorts were fielded by Zakspeed (Heyer and Hahne) and Grab, with Hezemans who built a car himself, using a Schrick engine, Porsche brakes, a Hewland gearbox and a space frame - the car would be disappointing but the ideas were right. Then there was an interesting 1600 cc Dallara-Fiat X 1/9 for Wolf, quick in the Friday rain, and last but not least there was the shock entry of Schnitzer with two turbocharged 1.4 2002’s, where everybody had expected them to run in division 1!

Division 1
Only eleven starters, but the top top drivers had a terrific fight. The lead changed six times, bit finally Schurti passed Wollek in the chicane - the cars touched but both reached the finish. Third was Neuhaus, nearly a lap down.

Division 2
In free practice, Cheever had demolished a BMW - a spare car arrived in the night before practice. The car didn’t go as well as the original one, and Eddie was a bit cautious in the left-hander after start and finish where he had his off. Fastest was Surer, then Heyer and Ertl in the 2002 Turbo. Heyer took the lead after the start, but soon Surer took over and they finished in this order. Winkelhock had a cautious start but passed Cheever, Grohs and Hezemans to finish third. Ertl had a fine race but threw it away in a spin. Another disappointing entry was Obermoser - his car was ready far too late (on Saturday afternoon) and with a car that he hardly knew he was even lucky to finish in 9th.
