Australian Touring Car Champion Allan Moffat and his Belgian co-driver Jacky Ickx dominated the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 touring car race at Bathurst on October 2 to the extent that they were able to slow in the closing stages to allow the sister Ford Falcon Hardtop of Colin Bond and Alan Hamilton to move up and stage a 1-2 formation finish for the Allan Moffat/Ford Dealer Team cars. The two cars crossed the line almost abreast, over a lap clear of the first of the surviving Toranas which was driven to third place by Peter Janson and GP driver Larry Perkins. The winning Falcon finished the race with its
front brake pads completely worn out and was, perhaps, lucky there were no Toranas close enough to challenge for the lead. Fourth, fifth and sixth places were also filled with Toranas - respectively the second string Marlboro-Holden Dealer Team car of Charlie O'Brien/Ron Harrop, the pre-race favourites and pole winners Peter and Philip Brock in the Bill Pettersen car, and veterans Tony Roberts/Doug Chivas in another Bill Patterson entry, the car the Brock brothers drove to third place in 1976.
The Brocks had diced with the Falcons for a while before being slowed by problems with the rear tyres rubbing on the suspension. In seventh place was the under 3-litre class winner, the Ford Capri of Barry Seton/Don Smith, followed by the Mazda RX3 of Terry Shiel/Don Holland taking second in the same class. Ninth outright went to the Alfa Romeo GTV2000, brilliantly driven to the 2-litre class win by the hard-driving Derek Bell and his co-driver Garry Leggatt, though Bell was only able to take the class lead in the closing laps when the Ford Escort of Rod Stevens/Tony Farrell lost its brakes, thus robbing Ford of sweeping all three classes in the race. The Escort finished in 10th place.
