Only 22 cars in practice for this race; and yet again BMW stole victory.
In the beginning, all went well for Porsche. Two cars on the front row, the Martini car nearly four seconds faster than the Evertz car. The fastest BMW was 2 seconds slower than the second-placed car.
In Friday practice, the Lancia was destroyed by fire in the Texaco chicane; and the Schnitzer CSL had a forceful coming together with the armco - but this car could be repaired in time - the Lancia would never return to the championship.
Porsche had taken a precaution; works driver Schurti could drive the Evertz car, if necessary - the race director answered a request from Porsche. But there was no written evidence of this decision - and that was to prove fatal in the end.
Then in the race, the Martini car retired before half-distance, after many pit stops. Schurti took over the Evertz car, so BMW race manager Neerpasch strolled to the race officials, demanding the evidence that Schurti was entered on the #3 car. Of course, such evidence did not exist, and the Evertz car was disqualified. So the only remaining group 5 Porsche was the Kremer car, rebuilt after a fire in Le Mans. It was piloted by Bell and Schuppan, since Heyer and Wollek were at the Norisring. The car had been disappointing in practice and especially Bell seemed to miss confidence in the car. But in the race it appeared up front when the other two retired, and it had 2 minutes in hand over the BMW armada. But the Kremer car ran into the same sort of problems - the throttle slide axle broke - that cost them 10 minutes and the race. A double BMW victory therefore, with Quester and Nilsson winning.
