Well, at last the Big Cat made its debut. And not only did it make its debut, but Derek Bell delighted the British Leyland hierarchy present at Silverstone at the weekend by planting the impressive looking 5.3-litre Jaguar XJ Coupe on pole position for the 107-lap Access Tourist Trophy, British round of the 1976 European Touring Car Championship. Bell then proceeded to take the lead at the start and swapped first place with Gunnar Nilsson's Luigi BMW CSL before losing four laps limping back to the pits with a punctured tyre. It subsequently restarted, well out of contention, but eventually retired when it lost a wheel at Becketts and David Hobbs (who'd taken over from Bell at the second pit stop) pulled it safely to a halt on the grass. This left the way open to the inevitable BMW steamroller with Jean Xhenceval/ Pierre Dieudonné/Hughes de Fierlant taking overall victory in their Luigi CSL from the Scuderia Tornacum machine of John Fitzpatrick/Jean-Louis Lafosse, these two being the only cars to run the full distance. A splendid third was the 2-litre class winning Alfetta GT of Amerigo Bigliazzi/Spartaco Dini ahead of the other Luigi CSL of Nilsson/Umberto Grano/Martino Finotto which had been delayed with a puncture and fuel pump bothers. Group 1 class winners were Gordon Spice/Peter Clark after a splendid effort in their 3-litre Capri. Before its retirement, Bell took the Jaguar round in 1.38,5, a new Group 2 saloon record for Silverstone's Grand Prix circuit. |
