The Nürburgring 4-hour race was an event with lots of history. Even in the darkest hours of group 2, the organisers never failed to get a competitive entry with the occasional Big Names. In 1976, the result was the signing of Jody Scheckter, Gunnar Nilsson and Hans-Joachim Stuck. But the problem was the lack of competitive cars. Nilsson and Stuck would drive a Luigi car, Scheckter would have driven the Zakspeed Escort - but after breaking the 15th crankshaft of the year in testing, Zakowski gave up. Scheckter was moved to the McMahon team. Luigi, meanwhile, by far the most professional team, had its share of problems after Nilsson had a small off in practice - and de Fierlant a big one. Luigi worked wonders to present an immaculate car on Sunday. Scheckter had to retire with engine problems, the TM Scirocco was in third place overall (!) but the two Luigi cars had a big lead. After a pit stop, the Scirocco would not start, unfortunately, and left the pits 50 minutes later. Then, Xhenceval had to stop the #1 car with zero oil pressure, handing victory to the second Luigi car of De Fierlant / Nilsson / Dewael. The rest of the finishers tell the story of a poor entry: second was a neat but old BMW 2002, third and fourth two Alfa Romeo GTV's, and in fifth the first group 1 car and the only car currently in production: a Ford Escort RS 2000, driven by journalist pairing Mauer and Braun. |
