Ten new Porsche 934’s were not facing the opposition they once dreamed of. No serious Capri to beat, and just one BMW - and only for this race. Schnitzer thought a CSL would have a chance here, even with the narrower tyres - courtesy of the 1976 rule set. The Porsches’ times had not been too impressive at the Nürburgring so far; bear in mind that Stuck clocked 8.10,9 in 1974. Krebs went round in a respectable 8.18,19, fifth on the grid - the fastest Porsche on pole had lapped in 8.12,4 - Kelleners in the Max Moritz 934. In division 2, we had 4 Escorts facing three 2002’s; Heyer and Ludwig had new cars, while Hennige piloted Heyer’s championship winning car. Schommers was racing a brand-new Grab car with a Hart engine. The opposition were two new GS BMW’s, of which one had a practice accident - Denzel writing off his new car. Schnitzer brought one 2002 for Neumann which was disappointing even when Krebs took the wheel in practice. The Zakspeed pair of Heyer and Ludwig were clearly fastest, but Obermoser was happy with his car. Hezemans was sure he could keep up with Kelleners in the race - and that went OK initially, outpacing Kelleners at the start and passing Stenzel when the latter spun. A fight started, but in lap 6 Hezemans came in for fuel - it was thought the 183 km were too much for the 120 litre tanks. Wollek followed, like the privateers, but the MM duo went on. Hezemans’ tyres were in a bad state at the end of the race, Wollek even finished with a puncture. But Kelleners and Stenzel finished 1-2, with Dunlop tyres and no pit stop! In division two, Porsches played a role they shouldn’t have played: Hennige had to swerve to avoid two colliding Porsches and punctured a tyre; Ludwig was hit by Kannacher and retired. The third Escort duelled with Obermoser, only to be forced to avoid Dören’s Carrera. Obermoser slipped past and won the class. |
