Again, the classes were combined - with a standing start to make life even less easy; the atmospheric division 2 cars would be much faster off the line than the turbocharged Porsches.
New entries this time were two Opel Kadetts; I dare to say another case of bad timing - which would be repeated quite often in the future. The idea wasn’t so bad; a group 4 Kadett with a 16-valve head. It could be made lighter than an Escort or a BMW, and it was piloted by one of the greatest German drivers ever - Walter Röhrl.
But even with 5 or more seasons of experience with a 2-litre touring car on the side of both Ford and BMW, Opel was very optimistic that they would match the pace of the others during the season. But with Pirelli tires, 13” wheels (and therefore small brakes), a weak engine, handling more suited to rallying and far too much weight the car was disappointing, of course.
The rest of the entry was the same as always. Ludwig and Kelleners had a coming-together in practice, but both cars could be repaired in time. And Wollek was complaining about his cars as usual, though he was fastest in first practice. Handling problems befell the Schnitzer duo as well but that could be cured. But the Escorts were fast here, even on this BMW track.
The start was as expected - the division 2 cars moved up, but Hezemans and Wollek escaped the rest of the pack, lapping 2 seconds faster than Stenzel, Bertrams and Kelleners. The battle was decided when Wollek who had just taken the lead had a massive spin in the Sachs corner. Though Hezemans spun later as well, the latter claimed victory.
Heyer had a special trick: after his furious start he followed Schenken (Carrera RSR) closely, slipstreaming along the fast straights until he decided that is his was big enough - and then he let Schenken go, after a “thank you” signal. Obermoser and Ludwig had a fight of their own, the latter claiming second with just a second over the GS BMW. And the Opels? Trint retired with a puncture, while Röhrl rallied to 7th in class.
After the race, the cars were weighted.
Obermoser: 845 kg (the minimum allowed!), Heyer: 857, Ludwig: 867 - because of the repairs.
And the Porsches? The minimum had to be 1120 kg.
Hezemans: 1140 kg, Kelleners 1130 kg, Wollek 1107 kg! It was weighted again, and again - now it was 1122 kg. It was left this way, but nobody was able to explain why the 934 had gained 15 kg in the mean time...
