Seven drivers still had a chance for the title after the Nürburgring GP race - after this race, only two remained.
Missing from the entry list were both Hezemans and Schickentanz - the latter was fired, the first one had a “tennis injury” and therefore could watch his protégée Boy Hayje in the Dutch GP. Hennige unsurprisingly was missing too, being replaced by Jäger.

Division 1
Fastest in practice had been Schenken. The Max Moritz team had its usual bunch of trouble; Stenzel had a coming together with the armco in first practice, and the next session he had a defective wheel bearing - he would have to start from the back. And even more misery: in the warm-up he missed his braking point, damaging the front suspension.
It wasn’t over yet: in the race, Kelleners retired after lap 1 with a broken turbo - just like Stenzel in lap 8...
Wollek had the best start, but Schenken was unbeatable this day - he won with 25 seconds in hand.

Division 2
Zakspeed had a new exhaust manifold, an extra 10,5 HP for both Heyer and Ludwig. But Obermoser had the best start and could lead the race for 5 laps, although he was right at the limit. Ludwig had asked for a new engine after practice, got one against Zakowski’s advice and now lacked pace to keep up with Obermoser and even Krebs. The BMW pair had a fierce battle, Krebs had a spin at the begin of the race but was clearly the fastest BMW now - and he passed Obermoser to underline this. But Obermoser followed closely, and slipstreamed post Krebs at the finish, behind winner Heyer.
The Opel team was disappointing yet again, though Röhrl’s modified car had now 15” wheels and was 8th fastest in practice - but retired on the warm-up lap with ignition problems. And poor Trint had a puncture in lap 1...
