The Grand Final of the championship took place at the tiny circuit of Dijon. The entry was for both BMW and Porsche optimal: BMW finally bought the turbo car and its 3 atmospheric sisters, Porsche had two works cars and the Kremer car, with a flat nose for the first time. Besides them there were modified group 4 cars for Evertz and Haldi.
The turbo BMW was fastest in practice, the car now sporting a reinforced differential, gearbox and half shafts. Martini Porsche took second and third on the grid, followed by the Kremer car.
The Stella-painted BMW took the lead and reduced turbo pressure until Ickx could just follow but nothing more. Then a big bang: the differential exploded, the the fight was over. Four Porsches in front, behind them the remaining BMW’s, of which the Faltz car had to pit with a broken rear suspension.
Leaders Stommelen and Schurti had a pit stop with brake troubles and dropped to third, behind Ickx/Mass and the Kremer car.
But Porsche was world champion.
