Vince Woodman was as lucky as he was overjoyed to win the Keith Prowse Touring Car Championship round at Brands Hatch on Sunday. Throughout the early stages of the race his Team Esso Uniflo Capri lay an unremarkable fifth, plagued in his own words by "diabolical understeer", and as the race wore on his engine began to tighten up with alarming progressiveness. But Tom Walkinshaw, Chris Craft, Colin Vandervell and Andy Rouse all had trouble in front of him, and on the last lap Woodman whistled past Craft's ailing Capri to take the chequered flag just 1.4s before Derek Bell's Dolomite got there. In the smaller classes Bernard Unett at last prised open a clear lead in the championship with his Chrysler Avenger. Up until Brands, he and Win Percy had won their classes every time, and it was clearly going to be a matter of who fell off first. Percy was the unlucky one, blowing his Toyota Celica's engine on the 16th of the 20 laps. |
