Britain's John Fitzpatrick teamed up with local driver Bob Morris in an Australian-built Holden Torana to win the tough Bathurst 1000 kilometre touring car race on Sunday. Held at the daunting 6.17 km (3.8 mile) Mount Panorama circuit in New South Wales, the race produced a grand slam for V8-engined General Motors L34 models which finished in the first seven places. Second place fell to local drivers Colin Bond/John Harvey who might have won if they hadn't pitted to change a fan belt in the closing stages when they were half a minute ahead, Fitzpatrick's car limped across the line, after nearly seven hours' racing, with a broken half shaft. Third place went to last year's winner Peter Brock who shared a Torana with his brother Phil. The race was a disaster for Ford with their 1974 winner John Goss finishing well down after troubled run in his Falcon and the pole position winning Falcon of Allan Moffat/Vern Schuppan out with a broken fan belt pulley which eventually cooked the engine. Moffat led the race and was fastest in practice, ahead of Brock, Bond and Allan Grice who shared a Torana with Frank Gardner. The Grice/Gardner car retired with a broken valve. In spite of a lurid moment in practice, the Torana shared by Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss lined up ninth fastest on the grid. Moffat's pole time was 2.25,0 while Brabham's best was 2.31,0 and Moss was 3.5s slower than his team mate. The car was almost wiped out in practice when Brabham arrived at the end of the 160 mph Con Rod Straight to find he had no brakes. He flung the car into third gear and then first at about 100 mph and spun for 200 yards down the road, narrowly missing Gardner. The Torana survived but was in trouble again at the start of the race when Brabham had problems with the clutch and the gearbox jammed between first and reverse as the flag fell. A car coming through from the back rammed the stationary Holden and that meant a three hour stint in the pits while the damage was put right using a complete rear end from the spare car. Eventually the car rejoined the race to keep faith with the crowd and Moss did most of the driving, eventually getting down to 2.32,2. They were classified fifty-first. P.S. |
