Practice times were generally disappointing - traffic, heat, you name it. Only four cars lapped under 8.30 minutes, but the fifth on the grid was the real sensation: the brand-new Zakspeed Escort II for Heyer. The car was developed by Zakspeed rather than the Cologne works team like Ludwig’s car. The car seemed lower and was more suited to sprint races with its simpler wheel hubs. Girling brakes instead of Ate, less weight. 8.32,5 was an outstanding time by all standards. Ludwig was outclassed - but a solution would be found in the future.
Apart from this, Krebs’ car had a new engine, 460 HP against the 425 of the Grohs ex-works car, but it was enough for second on the grid only - Wollek was fastest. Schommers was 6th overall, and spared his engine - he had only one. Zondler would not damage a car this time; the Swiss businessman enjoyed a well-deserved holiday.
Stenzel was away better than last time and took the lead, but Krebs used the horsepower in his BMW and took over. Schommers broke his front suspension at Karussell and retired. Mohr retired as well, pulled the hand brake and left his car - but signalling marshals made him look back - and to his grief the car rolled backwards and crossed the track at a point where fellow competitors could reach 230 km/h easily... but nothing happened.
Grohs could keep up, and passed Krebs - “I outbraked him” (Grohs) or “let him by” (Krebs) at Schwalbenschwanz - but the Schnitzer horsepower secured Krebs’ victory anyway after Döttinger Höhe. Wollek damaged a rim, had to pit and finished only sixth, behind the beautiful new Zakspeed car of Heyer. With a broken gearbox, Obermoser still managed second in class, while Ludwig was only 5th in class after engine troubles.
