After the non-championship curtain raiser, for the first time we got down to serious business. Grohs had a new car, the rebuilt Peltier 1974 car, with IMSA type bodywork and a 24-valve engine. Schnitzer entered the other two 24 valve cars, and we had the Capri RS 3100 for Schommers. Porsches were entered by Loos, Kremer, Tebernum and Max Moritz.
In division 2, we had only one 16-valve BMW (the Warsteiner car of Obermoser), and a bunch of Mk 1 Escorts, the most important ones of Heyer, Hennige and Mohr. And there was this other Escort. The first Mk II Escort, built by the Ford Cologne works mechanics for Ludwig, using many Capri parts like bodywork, rims, brakes, rear axle and suspension parts. The car was handed over to Zakowski, for Klaus Ludwig to drive. The car was a little heavier than the Mk1 car, and the bigger windows moved the gravity centre higher up. Beneficial could be the rear spoiler, a feature that neither the Mk1 or the BMW had.
Though the car performed well in practice, Zakowski was not really happy about the situation. Heyer more or less had bought a seat at Zakspeed, while Ludwig was the protégée of Ford. They would surely take away points from one another, possibly to the benefit of one of the BMW teams. Besides that, he would not have mind to have built the Escort II himself.
More news: the Jägermeister Kremer Carrera of Kelleners had an IMSA-style nose, and modifications of the interior which made the car illegal; and a VW Scirocco was entered; the engine design did not really look hopeful, but a healthy 150 HP was on tap, and the front-wheel drive car was light. A respectable time of 9.27,0 in practice (24th overall) was followed by an early retirement in the race; the car lost all its oil when it landed after a jump, damaging the sump.
Fastest in practice was Fitzpatrick, an optimal 8.18 was enough for pole; he was followed by Grohs and Stenzel, with the Schnitzer brigade next.
When the cars disappeared into the Südkurve, Grohs took the lead, while Krebs passed Fitzpatrick too, who was having gear shift problems. Krebs moved on to Grohs, but he left the track, losing the front spoiler. Team-mate Zondler passed the Porsche brigade on the long straight, but Grohs increased his lead. The 2 litre cars had a fight of their own, Heyer leading Obermoser and Ludwig - but the BMW had to come in, and met Heyer there who had also fallen victim of mechanical problems. The Zakspeed crew changed the half shaft so that Heyer could continue, but the BMW retired. This left Ludwig in the lead, and he would win the class, while Grohs claimed overall victory. Second place was finally for Schickentanz; he was first passed by Stenzel; but a spin from Zondler meant that he slipped past both of them.
