Car info: 1975 Cars

This was intended to be the first race of the 1975 DRM; a championship without works cars (it was thought) but with a healthy field of wealthy privateers.
At first, there was snow lots of it. The races on the Nordschleife had to be cancelled and replaced by the “Betonschleife”, the 2.3 km start and finish straight with a few corners. That meant the championship status was lost; but since the cars were already there they would race anyway.
The circuit allowed 15 starters only; luckily it was the Easter weekend, so both Sunday and Monday races were held - with a lot of prize money to be won on Monday.

Race A: Division 2, Sunday
Glemser had left the field after his crash at Macao; natural successor Heyer drove “the fastest Escort ever”, fastest at least until midsummer. Ludwig was guest driver in the second car; he would drive a work Escort the next race. He complained bitterly about his ‘72 car with 1975 modifications. The car was misfiring and did not have proper tires in practice. In the race, it was over after only one lap: his engine cried enough.
The opposition consisted of two BMW’s: the 1974 Alpina car, difficult to drive but mastered by ex-Renault-5 cup driver Grohs - his intended coupé sold to someone from Indonesia; which failed to materialise in the end, by the way. The other one was of course the GS Warsteiner car of Obermoser, rebuilt and improved.
Obermoser was able to keep up with Heyer; they exchanged the lead a few times. When Heyer had to retire, Obermoser won, Grohs came in second.

Race B: Division 1, Sunday
A competitive field here. Two Schnitzer cars, one from Faltz - and all with the 24-valve engine. A 24 valve Capri for Schommers, and then a trio Carrera’s for the Loos team, Tebernum and Kremer. Max Moritz brought its two Carrera’s as well, and Herbert Müller lent Haldi’s car.
Schommers concentrated on the Monday race after encountering handling problems - his intention was to go home after practice, but race director Ali Schatz convinced him to stay.
But the Schnitzer coupé was too fast for the others. Krebs won duly, followed by a battery of Porsches, of which Schenken was the fastest.

Race C: Division 2, Monday
Since Basche had not been able to qualify, and race control was as flexible as concrete, the Warsteiner car was loaded up the trailer and went back to Freiburg. Heyer won therefore, while Grohs retired from second place.

Race D: Division 1, Monday
Stommelen was hired to win the “money” race, which he did. Schommers gave up with handling problems.
