Division 1
Finally, and for the last time, Ford and BMW would meet in works form on the circuit. Jochen Mass would drive the remaining works Capri in the DRM race, Stuck would race an imported and modified IMSA car, which would be handed over to Faltz for Grohs, who had been a little generous with armco contact to put it mildly. Peterson would drive the “Geldrennen”. A sensation in the form of a Schnitzer BMW 2002 Turbo for Peterson (an ideal car for this track - 500 HP but only 890 kg) did not work out since the Schnitzer team found no time to prepare the car.
Apart from the works pair, we had the occasional pair of Schnitzer cars and a CSL for Grohs. We missed Schommers (recovering from a car accident, but why was the car not driven by anyone else - works driver Hezemans for instance?). And of course the Carreras, suited to this tight track. Stuck was fastest in practice, followed by four Carreras and then Mass. The suspension of the Capri was completely changed during the night, while the works BMW was recovering from accident damage: Peterson had smashed the coupé in free practice.
Damage for Schnitzer as usual; Zondler had crashed in the rain, Krebs’ engine had to be changed.
On the way to the grid, Kelleners engine made suspicious noises; he changed into the Vaillant car, while his Jägermeister would receive the engine from Siewertsen’s jeans car for the Geldrennen later in the afternoon. Schickentanz could not start; his car got a new engine for the Geldrennen as well.
After the Start, Mass took the lead, but Stuck countered in the hairpin - Mass tries to pass again, but Stuck defended. In lap 3, Mass passed now on the inside of the hairpin, Stuck followed - and got in front in lap 7 again. But Mass retook the lead in the very same lap.
Behind this terrific fight, Stenzel and Wisell closed in on Krebs, who could not defend since both his cooling devices on his brakes broke.
After 15 laps we had Mass in front, then Stuck, Grohs (who fell back a little and could be attacked by Kelleners), Kelleners, Wisell, Stenzel and Krebs. Grohs’ brake cooling system failed as well, so the three Porsches passed him soon. Zondler retired with ignition problems, and Leder retired after contact with Lässig.
Lap 36 and Stuck was in front once again, albeit for a short period. Kelleners got into tire problems, while Stuck used his left front only occasionally; the BMW three-wheeled through the corners. 11 laps before the finish, it was over for the white BMW - the rear brakes were locked. Mass won in front of Stenzel and Kelleners.

Division 2
The order was Heyer, Obermoser and Ludwig after practice of division 2. Ludwig drove only 5 laps before his engine exploded, 400 rpm over the limit said the telltale on the rev counter. Fourth was the surprising Mayer (Schnitzer 2002), then Hennige. Zakspeed experimented with tire makes: they used Firestone, Goodyear (which saved pole) and Dunlop (which were used for the race). Herrmann did well too, with Becker’s 1974 car - and a brand-new Schnitzer engine, while Karl-Heinz himself was beaten by his old car. Experiments with 15” wheels and a failing fuel pump hindered a faster time.
The grid showed a row of Escorts on the right and a line of 2002’s on the left. Heyer and Obermoser both entered the hairpin with a tight line, allowing Ludwig with a much wider line to take the lead in the still unwelcome Escort II. After three laps, Heyer went by, and three laps later Obermoser found a way through too. The fight could start all over again, but after 13 laps it was over for Heyer - engine failure. Ludwig dropped back (gearbox problems) any many other cars went into the pits and out again. Obermoser won with 20 seconds in hand over Ludwig.

Geldrennen
The Grand Final of the day, more damage and more drama. Mass and Fitz in row 1, Hezemans and Stenzel in row 2; at the rear, Peterson, Zondler and Schickentanz. After the start, Mass took the lead, followed by the three Gelo cars. Ronnie started his race for glory from behind, but Schenken was already out, after yet another crash of Grohs, who rammed the Carrera from behind. “My fault” said Grohs, who could continue with a lot of damage and reduced tempo. Heyer retired with gearbox failure, Schickentanz with a clutch full of oil.
The Mass came in twice to repair a broken injection slide, so the Loos cars were firmly in the lead now, while Peterson gave up after 23 laps - brakes, what else. Krebs did not have to brake anymore, after locking up in the hairpin with a lot of damage afterwards.
Fitz returned the favour from the GT race, Hezemans could win and Loos could throw a party. Mass could only manage fastest lap after his stops.
