The third round of the fast-rising Coupe de l'Avenir series attracted 48 entrants for the Monza 500 Miles on Sunday. Winner of the opening two rounds, Tom Walkinshaw driving one of two immaculate 3-litre Capri 2 GTs backed by Hermetite, was leading the event by a lap and a minute with half an hour to go. Then the 230 bhp Capri, travelling at 140 mph into Lesmo curve, suffered total brake failure, mounted the kerb and flipped over three times in a horrific accident. Walkinshaw avoided major injury but a swollen wrist was being further investigated on Tuesday after the race. After the incident, the Dutch Commodore of Vermeulen and Frankenhout took the lead and brought the win home, despite a puncture. |
