Seven drivers were in the running for the DRM title. But after this race, only one of them had scored here.

Four serious victory candidates in division 2: Heyer with the unloved Escort II, Obermoser in his usual car (but on 15” wheels for the first time), Hennige in his black Escort and Denzel with the 13” Escort, still a competitive car.

After the start, a bitter fight started between Obermoser and Hennige; Obermoser on the left, Hennige on the right - close before the chicane. Obermoser was ahead, Hennige’s front wheel touched the BMW’s door. Obermoser spun but continued in seventh place now - alas he had to visit the pits, where both wheels on the right side were changed. But 12 laps later Obermoser had to give up - he was a very angry man.
Hennige was still in the lead, ahead of Denzel - but Heyer was already out with a broken fuel pump.
The Zakspeed duo had now lapped the whole field, but then Denzel retired as well, handing victory to Hennige. A protest was issued against Hennige, and Hennige was thrown out of the results - but was reinstated later; it was decided that races on an airfield track allowed for a little more risk than elsewhere.
Contenders #1 and #2, Heyer and Obermoser: zero points

In division 1, apart from the usual entries both Tebernum and Loos entered cars. Another newcomer was Klaus Ludwig in the ex-works Capri which was last used by Mass at the Norisring. It was told that the car was acquired by Ludwig’s father - so it should not be seen as a works entry.
One way or another: the Ludwig car was the lightest, most powerful RS 3100 in history, thanks to a new engine with F5000 modifications.

An man sadly missed was Urs Zondler, the running gag of the 1975 season for German magazine “Sport Auto”. Urs flew to the track in style, in his private twin-engined aeroplane. But he could not land: after he tried three times, racing cars were still using the same part of the trick as he intended. He ignored calls from the control tower to not even think about landing here - he should use Paderborn instead. But Urs was angry and returned home.

Candidates for victory here were Ludwig with his new car (fastest qualifier), Grohs and Krebs. Schommers, whose only wish was to finish here, blew his engine but was very happy to be able to use Ludwig’s spare engine. But in the race, rising water temperatures killed any idea of finishing.
The order after lap 1 was Ludwig, Grohs and Krebs - followed by a horde of Porsches, minus Kelleners who retired on the spot with ignition problems (contender #3). Stenzel followed suit in lap 12, after a coming together with Schickentanz - exit contender #4.
Lap 14: Ludwig comes in with throttle linkage problems, and loses two laps. A sticking throttle takes him out, and he loses the front spoiler. He will finish 9th eventually (that was contender #5).
Fitzpatrick joins the retirements when he damages his car when avoiding another Carrera; Siewertsen had gearshift problems (not for the first time this year).
Grohs, our contender #6, had gearbox problems and the the vibration damper gave up; he would finish in 8th spot.
The final was dramatic: both Wollek and Schenken closed in on Krebs, and then Krebs had to lap the Capri of Ludwig. Ludwig blocked Krebs - memories of the Rheinpokal rennen came back, where Zondler had blocked Schommers.
Both Wollek and Schenken managed to pass Krebs, and on the last but one lap Krebs could take over from the Porsches once again, while Ludwig tried to push Krebs into a mistake - a little unfair, as Ludwig admitted after the race.
So contender #7 was the only one to score significant points: Krebs took the lead in the championship.
