Though this race was the opening of the Makes’ World Championship, not a single prototype turned up for this race: a few FIA GT cars and a full IMSA field was all.
Still this race was most interesting. After the invasion of the German Porsche Carrera, a new team had arrived: the BMW works team, with two immaculate white CSL 4-valve cars, with a star driver entry to match.
Main US force was Greenwood’s Corvette, which claimed pole but was not expected to last the distance - and if this would be the case, frequent stops for fuel and brake pads would hamper its progress. The Carrera’s proved to be slower than the BMW’s in practice, the brand-new Ferrari BB was neither fast nor reliable.
After the start, Greenwood took the lead, which lasted for about an hour, then he dropped back with cooling problems.
BMW raced on Goodyear tires, not to everybody’s satisfaction. Still, Stuck was able to take over from Greenwood and created some distance between him and the Porsche horde, which in turn had to deal with another Corvette, that of Thompson.
Then Peterson was black flagged for defective brake lights; after the repair, he tried to make up lost ground but then a drive shaft snapped and that was it.
Rojas collided with Gregg, which cost the latter a lap for repairs.
Midnight, and Shafer in Greenwood’s Corvette was forced into the wall at high speed - the car was destroyed apart from its roll cage.
The waiting game for Porsche paid off as the leading BMW threw a rod and retired, leaving the race to Holbert/EFR. But Gregg was reclaiming lost ground fast, and when the leading car developed problems with clutch and gearbox. The repairs only solved the problem temporarily, and during the last 9 hours the car slowed and finally retired, the distance covered enabling an 8th overall.
In the end, the first 13 cars were Porsches, apart from a Ferrari Daytona in seventh - with Gregg/Haywood as the winners.
