A new venue but the wrong date: the Nürburgring 1000 km (well, 750 km in fact) was more important to the works teams than the ETCC round, although the champioship points were only available here.
Ford won the Touring Car battle at the Nürburgring, by the way (Hezemans/Glemser), a long way behind the turbo Carreras.

So Ford only sent a semi works ‘73 car for young Ludwig and Waltraud Odenthal to Vallelunga, and it would have to deal with the usual contenders, like the Belgian BMW, the Faltz- and Alpina cars, the Jolly Club BMW and a Schnitzer car. The seventh competitive car was the British Camaro.

The Précision Liegeoise car of Peltier/Lafosse took pole in front of the Camaro.

After ten laps, Heyer with the Escort took the lead (!) but lost it later to the Jolly Club car. Lafosse took over from Peltier, who had lost a minute to the lead car, but Lafosse fought back and took the lead.
An early retirement was there for Schommers in the Faltz car, while Odenthal fell victim to an old Capri problem: her car raced on 5 cylinders only.
Lafosse and Peltier kept their lead and duly won, with Finotto/Mohr in second, Heyer/Krebs (Zakspeed Escort) third and the lonely Ford Capri fourth.

National races
Vallelunga hosted the third race for the Italian championship as well this weekend, and the little 500 cc cars were led from the outset by polesitter “Doppio Rhum”, followed by Squarise, "Gastone" and Drovandi, though the latter is blackflagged since he is losing oil. "Gastone" opened up and took the lead for good, while Laganà retired.
The 600 and 700 cc race was won by Aldo Fina (back after a long absence), in the spirit of "Veni, vidi, vici." Fasolino had been quickest in practice, but on the first lap it was clear that only a retirement could keep Fina from winning. "Yankee" was the first 600, and Fasolino lost most of his gears, finishing with third gear available only in third behind Fina and Galluzzo.
For the race for 850, 1000 and 1150 cc it was obvious that Rino Amighini would be dominant once again. It would be a triple Abarth 1000 victory, with Amighini winning ahead of Binati and "Delta".
While Bernero won the 850 class, the 1150s had a lively struggle between Zagari, Frasson and Pezzella. The latter two bumped into each other at the finish line, and Pezzella ended in the guard rails. Almost at the same time Salomone (Fiat 128) was put on its side in the middle of the ‘S’ but fortunately the damage was limited.
Finally, the 1300 and 1600 cc cars hit the track. Litrico (Autodelta Alfa GTA) did not seem to bother that there was a 500 km race to follow and stormed away, and only Ghislotti was able to follow. But if last year Litrico won at this track, stopping just beyond the finish line out of fuel, this year he was less lucky - he ran out of fuel with 5 laps to go...
