Stuart Graham's Camaro put on a convincing display to lead the Castrol Anniversary Touring Car race from start to finish. Richard Lloyd's Simoniz Camaro chased him hard for the whole distance but remained over five seconds behind at the end. Vince Woodman put his Camaro on pole position when he found just the right tyres for the wet Thursday afternoon practice session, but in the dry race he didn't have the edge on the other two and finished a distant third. Les Nash took his Camaro into fourth place at the start, but his problems began after four laps when the gear lever came off in his hand. Having discovered how to slot it back into place he continued in the same position, but with the brakes wearing themselves out at a rapid rate he was unable to stay in front of Peter Hanson's class winning Opel GSE for very long. Such was Graham's pace that Hanson was the last unlapped finisher. Nash retired to the pits with scored brake drums five laps from the end and so fifth place went to Tom Walkinshaw's Capri. Sixth was Andy Rouse whose Dolomite Sprint again dominated its class, beating Tony Dron's Dolomite, John Lyons' Alfa and John Handley's Dolomite in the process. After overtaking Dron with a demon bit of wheel locking late braking at Old Hall, Barrie Williams' Mazda looked a good second in class, but then the cutting out problems which they thought they'd traced to fuel pressure maladies and cured, set in again and Williams retired six laps from the finish. Tony Lanfranchi's BMW was just behind Williams for the first seven laps of the race, but although he was very happy with his temporary Van Der Steen makeshift motor, he dropped out of the race when a tie-rod broke and the car turned right instead of left. Lanfranchi has a new engine being built up by a 'responsible builder' and the team are pinning their hopes on it for May 11 at Silverstone. |
