Ford would leave nothing to chance in the most important race of the year. So far, Ford has always won division 1, while BMW won division 2 at all races. They studied the brakes of the Camaro, tried new callipers with 8 pistons, but after Mass crashed in practice they returned to the original brakes. New bodywork meant that the radiators could move from the rear to the side of the car. The engine was changed from Lucas- to Kugelfischer. BMW, with two works cars for the first time this year, had brake modifications too; in Stuck’s car an Ate-ABS was installed, which worked fine. He was partnered by Peterson, while the other car was driven by Ickx/Bell.
The entry list saw eight other BMWs, and in division 1 some 2002s which should be able to give Zakspeed a run for its money. Pole was for Stuck, then two Capris and the second works BMW.

Mass escaped the BMW sandwich after the start, but he had to pit soon with electrical problems, a consequence of a Lauda crash in practice. Stuck had a big lead, and then the rain set in. Mass, on slicks, hit the barriers and rolled, complaining that he had to brake because Mohr rolled in front of him. Mohr, surprised by the rain too, had another version of the incident: Mass was rolling when he could not have seen the BMW. This was not the last incident today, since Koinigg (Alpina-BMW) rolled his car too after brake failure, of which Ertl had complained before. Kraus put the Faltz coupé in the catch fencing, and Stuck, a long way in the lead, collided after 9 laps with a dreaming Commodore driver, which punctured his tire some 7 kilometres before the pits. The tire trashed the front suspension, leaving no other option (especially at the Nürburgring) than to retire the car. So we had lost two works cars (a Capri and a BMW) and three private BMW’s. The second works BMW retired with a broken gearbox, just after Stuck took over this car. The second works Capri came in after exactly four hours with a strange sounding differential, which was replaced in 27 minutes 40 seconds.

Now the sole surviving Alpina BMW of Siegmund Ogrodowczyk and Siegfried Müller was in the lead, in front of two Zakspeed Escorts (he had just passed the leading Ludwig, who was on intermediates) and the repaired Capri. When it entered its last lap, Müller went to the rostrum, the BMW engine sounding crisp as in its first lap. Nothing could go wrong, only the fuel was marginal. Then from Breidscheid the news was: Ludwig is in the lead! Fuel? No, Ogrodowczyk had a flat tire, just like Mass. They continued slowly, Mass reaching the finish, Ogrodowczyk lost his tire and spun.

When Ludwig climbed out of the winning car, the darkest suspicions became reality. Ogrodowczyk had tried to lap Mass in a difficult spot, and Mass stated that he did not know the BMW was the lead car and that he was sorry. Ogrodowczyk said he backed off, then the Escort oversteered a little, hitting the BMW.
Ford did not complain: they won division one and two.
