After the Diepholz race, three favourites stood out, Obermoser, young Ludwig and Glemser.
Glemser was in form: after a lap of 8.37,2, which was an error from the time-keeper’s box, Glemser did a legal 8.35,2, fast enough for pole, with team-mate Heyer second. Problems for BMW: gearbox failure for Obermoser, engine failure for Kelleners. To make things worse, behind them on the grid were another two Zakspeed Escorts...
But all might have been in vain, if Glemser’s car hadn’t fired up with only ten seconds to go before the warm-up lap.

The field set out on an very wet track, most cars started on full wets. Glemser took the lead, followed by Heyer who had more troubles with his 13” wheels. Obermoser could overtake Krebs but that was about it - Heyer was out of reach, while Kelleners had given up with ignition failure.

For Ludwig in division 1, points seemed not that easy since the race was combined with an European GT race, so a lot of fast Porches turned up, three of them taking the first three spots on the grid. Stommelen was only fourth, with mysterious handling problems, Ludwig was seventh.
After the start, Stommelen forgot his problems and followed Fitzpatrick closely. After lap 1, rain was falling at Flugplatz and Hatzenbach. Now all cars were on slicks - an unwarned Fitzpatrick lost it and went backwards in the rails, Stommelen had taken notice and slowed almost to a standstill - but he could continue. Other victims were Schickentanz (Loos #1), Haldi and Emanuelsson, flown in from Sweden to drive the Gerstmann car vacated by Krebs, who took a Zakspeed seat.
Last but not least, Herbert Müller (Loos #2) went into the armco at Hatzenbach, got going again, passed Ludwig , lost it at Aremberg, removing the catch fencing there, got going yet again, passed through the field - including Ludwig. Ludwig could not believe his eyes when he met Müller once again, now parked into the barriers at Metzgesfeld. “Keller and I drove in first gear, but he drove like a man possessed. I don’t understand how a man of his experience can drive like that on slicks”, Ludwig said after the race.

Keller went in for rain tires, Stommelen changed to intermediates, Heyer and Sabine came in with damaged bodywork, but Ludwig continued on slicks - his car not suited for a quick change of tires. He drove cautiously, but when the track dried he could speed up. A fine second behind Stommelen was the result - and Kranefuss had to make his mind up very soon how to help Ludwig in the championship.

If the racing had not been exciting enough, behind the scenes all kinds of rumours were playing up. Some cars would not be legal!
Like the GS 2002 - it used illegal fuel, some said. Others accused it of having titanium conrods, like the formula 2 engine, but not allowed in touring cars. “Nonsense”, according to Basche, “it would not make any difference. Steel ones rev just as high.”
And why had Fitzpatrick chopped off some 6,5 seconds off his time from the 1000 km race in a Loos car?
“Why? We develop our cars, unlike the Porsche customers like Loos.” To end any further doubts, he held an “open-engine” party in the evening, to illustrate that his recently acquired IMSA cylinders and pistons (good for 3300 cc) were not used. Loos was the only one not invited...
