After the oil crisis shock, the German championship seemed to find its way again. Two 24-valve works Capris were entered, inspired by the starting money and with gaining experience with the new car in mind. Shell decals pointed to the free fuel and oil for the 1974 season, “we accept what we can get” as Kranefuss commented. Fastest in practice was Hezemans, Stenzel in second, Stommelen third. The Capris were favourites, but had all sorts of problems during practice; ignition, handling, all resulting in a disappointing 8.21,4 pole. A surprising second was Stenzel, 8.29,0, driving like a man possessed. Unfortunately, the race was a disappointment for him, a broken seat forcing his retirement. “Funny but dangerous” was the comment of Ertl about the handling of the Alpina coupé which he was thought to drive - until he was replaced by Betzler, whose Alpina 2002 was not ready in time. The result was 8.58,7 for Betzler, so Ertl went out again and changed the set-up. |
