Germany’s prestige was at stake, once again. Notwithstanding the reduced budget, factory entries of Porsche, BMW and Ford spiced the sportscar race with their car. Of course, Porsche had a full season of Sportscar racing - but Ford and BMW were supposed to tackle the ETCC.

While the Turbo Porsches were clearly too fast for the others (though they had some troubles - an accident by Schurti and fuel feed problems for the other car), the GT cars had a fascinating race, hunting each other lap after lap. The touring cars were not quite as entertaining, unfortunately. Ertl smashed the Alpina coupé in practice in the barriers, a feat he had supposed to have overcome the last few years.

The start was taken by another old CSL, a works car and two works Capris. The lead Capri and BMW had a fight early in the race, but Stuck had to retire soon with gearbox troubles, followed a few laps later by the Capri of Lauda/Mass. The remaining Capri won its class, underlining newly-found reliability.
