The penultimate round of the championship had a great entry, thanks to the prize money - a separate non-championship final with 100.000 Marks. This attracted the Ford and BMW works teams (2 cars both - would this be the last time?) and the Cologne enemies Kremer and Loos, both with three cars and star drivers. Division two had less new faces, only the sparsely used hi-tech Alpina 2002 making a return. Back to the championship: while Obermoser and Glemser had driven their own cars the whole season, Ludwig had seen three of them. This time, it was Zakspeed, not to Glemser’s delight. Ludwig delivered and was second in practice, in front of all BMW’s. After the start. Glemser took the lead, with Ludwig second, Hennige third, then May and Obermoser. Obermoser fired up, passed May and Hennige and could get past Ludwig when the Ford driver became gearbox problems. Glemser was out of reach though - both drivers now had 117 points - the championship would be decided at the last race. Hezemans was fastest of division 1, but the others were hardly slower - apart from Bell (rear axle), Fitzpatrick and Keller (engine). All was not over yet. The grand final had 20 starters, the fastest from both divisions, though not everybody wanted to risk his car. |
