The penultimate round of the championship had a great entry, thanks to the prize money - a separate non-championship final with 100.000 Marks. This attracted the Ford and BMW works teams (2 cars both - would this be the last time?) and the Cologne enemies Kremer and Loos, both with three cars and star drivers. Division two had less new faces, only the sparsely used hi-tech Alpina 2002 making a return.
Norisring is all about brakes. Most cars had developed brake cooling systems, more or less illegal but no one really cared. Loos thought it “would not be necessary”.

Back to the championship: while Obermoser and Glemser had driven their own cars the whole season, Ludwig had seen three of them. This time, it was Zakspeed, not to Glemser’s delight. Ludwig delivered and was second in practice, in front of all BMW’s.

After the start. Glemser took the lead, with Ludwig second, Hennige third, then May and Obermoser. Obermoser fired up, passed May and Hennige and could get past Ludwig when the Ford driver became gearbox problems. Glemser was out of reach though - both drivers now had 117 points - the championship would be decided at the last race.

Hezemans was fastest of division 1, but the others were hardly slower - apart from Bell (rear axle), Fitzpatrick and Keller (engine).
Hezemans took the lead, followed by Stuck, Lauda, Stommelen and Heyer. Stuck dropped back a little to save brakes and tires - Hezemans and Lauda cared less and flew over the track.
After about 40 laps, Stuck started the attack. Lauda went into the pits to check his gearbox, and retired some time later. Stuck now closed in on Hezemans, whose rear axle started to break. Six laps before the end, he passed the Dutchman and had a popular victory. At the back of the field, Fitzpatrick and Haldi had a fight - too close perhaps, both cars reached the finish with a lot of damage.

All was not over yet. The grand final had 20 starters, the fastest from both divisions, though not everybody wanted to risk his car.
Again, Hezemans took the lead, Lauda second, both with a fresh gearbox. Stuck dropped back again, in front of Müller, then Heyer, Stommelen, Fitzpatrick, Haldi, Bell and Schenken.
Lap 22: Lauda came in with an unwilling gearbox, and retired a little later. Hezemans had to come in for water, returned in attack mode but unsurprisingly the car blew a head gasket. The new order (pun not intended in this fascist place) was Stuck, Müller, Heyer, Stommelen and Bell, who fought back with style - until his rear axle played up.
A great weekend.
