Division 2
The BMW opposition for Zakspeed became stronger and stronger. Schlüter had engineer Preukschat design a new rear suspension, while the car already had radiators at the rear for the engine and rear axle. 14” wheels with brakes not unlike the 1973 works Capri gave the car superior handling. The engine though was the weak point, Kelleners complaining that he could not keep up with Obermoser or May at the straight. May had a very powerful engine, but the chassis was not quite as sophisticated; with its 13” wheels braking would deteriorate after 48 laps. But then, Obermoser had a strong engine AND 14” wheels. The Alpina 2002, the most sophisticated 2002 ever, did not turn up; either the car was not ready in time, or the starting money was not to Bovensiepen’s liking.

After the start, pole sitter Glemser (fastest all right, but even Zakowski questioned his time) went too fast in the second right-hander on cold tires, damaging a rim - he had to pit for a fresh wheel and finally climbed to fourth, helped by his Firestones, all four of them. But the BMW brigade was out of reach, Obermoser the fastest of the bunch, while Kelleners could only overtake May when the Schnitzer car’s brakes faded.
A serious accident marred this race; Alfa Romeo driver Greilich, his car out of control, went into an area where no spectators were allowed - unfortunately, there were spectators. A kid was killed and several others injured.

Division 1
No works cars and no Kremer or Loos Porsches at Mainz-Finthen, so the field was a little thin. Stenzel was fastest in practice, and was fastest in the race, shortened to 30 laps because of the accident of division 2. Ludwig was a strong second, the young man likely to be a rising star. Third was Bertrams, a surprise as well, in front of two BMW’s. Schommers had a bad start and had a lot of trouble overtaking Krebs and Arm - he managed only when Krebs had lost his front spoiler and Arm misjudged a corner - by then the others were too far away.
