In the prototype class, Porsche and Ligier defended the “silhouette” class, together with an American Carrera and the Ferrari 308 GT4. The Porsches were fast as usual, in fact if the van Lennep/Müller car had not the car only third and fourth gear left at the end. It was enough for the “silhouette” victory though, the second Turbo Carrera a lot slower and an eventual retirement. The Ligiers were surprisingly quick, splitting the Martini pair in practice, but the race was a different story. The GT field consisted of 15 Carrera’s, 5 Daytonas, a Corvette (1970, 8 litre, 500 HP and 1464 kg) and a Pantera. Fastest of them in practice was the Kremer car of Keller/Heyer and Erwin himself, helped by a tow from a Martini car. Barth and Loos, with a slim 1973 car with a full 3-litre engine, were hardly slower - in fact the car was superior to the other Carrera’s on the straight. The Touring Car race, in earlier years spiced with works entries, consisted of only three cars; two ex-works BMWs and a Capri. Only one BMW finished. |
