Second practice of division 2: approaching the Ostkurve, Glemser closely follows Obermoser. Obermoser has two slower competitors in front and has to brake hard. Glemser tries to stay clear of the BMW, sees an opening, hits the throttle, the Escort goes sideways, rolls and follows Obermoser for 100 meters - on the roof. The car hits the armco and overturns another two times. Glemser climbs out en goes aboard Obermoser’s BMW, who had stopped politely.

Still, Glemser is on pole, Obermoser second, with a gap of three seconds to May. Kelleners is only fifth, while Kautz was disappointed by the Zakspeed team (he felt neglected after disobeying team orders at the first round) and went home even before practice. Kautz had already decided to quit racing.

The repaired car of Glemser was no match for Obermoser in the race, a damaged rim certainly not improving matters: Glemser could only manage third, just in front of Appel. May with his strong engine was second.

Division 1 had some hectic moment when rain set in just before the start. Most decided to change tires on the grid, while Stommelen complained about ignition troubles.

When the flag dropped, Stommelen led but had to give way to Heyer soon, and he even dropped back behind Betzler because of his engine, still not firing properly.
The weather cleared, the track dried and even Stommelen’s engine problems had ceased. He started to climb up the field again, while race control had decided it was penalty time now. Betzler had missed the chicane three times, and he had to be disqualified, but he was already in in pits with high water temperature. Bovensiepen directed the car to the paddock. The other Alpina cars faired no better: Ertl retired on the last lap, Arm’s engine was sick, and Schommers had an off-day.
Stenzel had been the only leading contender on intermediates and was flying now. Four laps before the end, he passed Heyer but the victory would not be his; his start had been a little too swift and he received a 1-minute penalty for that. He was still good for third overall, behind Heyer and Stommelen.
