An entry spiced with many Swiss drivers once again, thanks to the Swiss championship races which took place here. Since Stenzel was unlucky, the order was clear: Stommelen, Ludwig and Heyer, and because Ludwig should collect full points, Stommelen made a tragic error on the last corner, so Ludwig could slip past. An unprofessional move; it would have been wiser to change order somewhere on the long straights in the forest. A dull race, just like division 2 would be. Zakspeed had brought four Escorts once again, while GS stuck to one BMW; but well-prepared. Initially, Obermoser was faster in practice, but when Glemser replaced his Dunlops by Firestones, he could better his time to 2.22,2 - pole. Both favourites had a good start, Glemser took the lead, followed by Obermoser, Kelleners, May and Becker. The Zakspeed armada hampered: Hezemans was too far back at the start, Hennige’s car did not start and had lost nearly one lap when it finally did fire, and Appel was too slow to enter the frame. Thoughts were already at the next event. Basche foresaw brake problems with the heavy GS 2002, the prize money would attract many opponents for Ford, like Porsches, well suited to the track, and a works CSL, for instance. Kranefuss had no answer to Hezemans question: “Will I drive at the Norisring, and in what car?” - two Capris and four Escorts available... |
