Tension, tension. And a combined race for division 1 and 2 did not help matters. Ford had promised to send only a single Capri for Ludwig if BMW would not send a works CSL - but Neerpasch was suspicious and brought a coupé anyway, to be on the safe side. And when Glemser came in after two laps of practice, and parked right behind Ludwig’s works car, Neerpasch opened the transporter and rolled the CSL into the pit lane. Stuck got ready - if Glemser would climb into the Capri, Stuck would enter the frame too. But Glemser continued with the Escort - though the game was repeated a few times.

Since it was important for a division 2 car to qualify close to the front, Ludwig and Glemser slipstreamed around the course, enabling Glemser a time of 2.19,3 - 3,4 seconds under the lap record. Ludwig himself did a 2.14,4, one second under the record. Obermoser tried to counter, slipstreaming behind Stenzel, but this did not really help - and a test on smaller tires only overrevved the engine. But the BMW had won twice at Hockenheim, so there was still optimism. The only cloud on the horizon (apart from the fast Escort) was rain - the BMW would be severely handicapped with its higher weight and independent rear suspension.

And the rain came at the last possible moment, so the cars had to change tires on the grid. The cars disappeared in the rain, and when they entered the stadium once again, it was Ludwig in the lead, then Stenzel, then Glemser already! He was followed by Bertrams, Schommers in the Grab Capri and then Obermoser. It looked a little like Schommers blocked Obermoser - a BMW supporter did not agree and attacked Schommers after the race.
Glemser was too fast anyway, and finished in a sensational third overall. In front of him, Ludwig and Stenzel had traded places, because the intermediates of Stenzel were superior when the track dried.

A deserved championship for Zakspeed.
