Race director Rumpfkeil had done it again; a big entry for little money. The results of the 6 hour race had changed the points table dramatically. Heyer, Ludwig and Glemser collected 20 extra points, while Kelleners and Obermoser got no points at all. So Ford had chances - though they had helped Porsche driver Heyer too. No risk therefore, two works Capris would block Heyer while in division two Hezemans would help Glemser. BMW had to react and sent a works CSL for Stuck.

But in the end, all would work out a little different. For a start, the second Capri, intended for Lauda, was shattered at the Nürburgring 6 hours, and Stommelen had problems with handling and brakes - Stuck proved faster in practice, despite a painful leg. Behind them were the Porsches of Fitzpatrick (Kremer), Schickentanz (Loos) and Heyer (Kremer) - and in front of Heyer Gardner with his Camaro. The other BMW’s were too slow, Schommers still disappointing.

When the flag fell, Stuck took the lead in his ABS equipped car, followed by Stommelen, then Fitzpatrick. Rolf ran into brake troubles, and had to let Fitzpatrick go. Predictably, the Camaro blew up, and Schickentanz first had a slow puncture, then gearbox problems and lost his brakes soon after. Stuck won but was exhausted; he was not yet recovered from his shunt in the British GP. Fitzpatrick was second, Stommelen third.
Hezemans told the press that he never before had driven an Escort - not true really, he had raced a Willment TC in a Dutch championship race in 1970. But a Zakspeed RS is a little different, of course. Despite its elder 13” suspension, he was as fast as Glemser who should have benefited from the modern 15” chassis. But the car just was not good here, never finding a decent set-up. Obermoser and Kelleners were going well, but May complained bitterly about his Schnitzer car - a good engine but little else.

After the start, Glemser led in front of Hezemans, Obermoser, Kelleners, Hennige (a third Zakspeed car) and May. Lap 3, and Obermoser passed Hezemans, two laps later he passed Glemser too. But after 13 laps, Hezemans was back in the lead, Obermoser second and Glemser third, after losing a battle with his Dutch team-mate, which left a few question marks in the Ford camp. It didn’t matter, since Glemser retired with engine troubles. So a Ford victory here - with the wrong car - Obermoser still had a 7-point lead over Ludwig. A tactical move would be to move Ludwig either to a works Capri or to Zakspeed...
