In spite of the absence of Frank Gardner, the event was a success. Not only Xhenceval was aiming for another victory over Bourgoignie, but from Germany Ogrodowczyk (BMW CSL) and Fritzinger (Capri) were entered. There was some rain at the start of the race, but everybody started on slicks. Bourgoignie took the lead, followed by Xhenceval, Fritzinger and Ogrodowczyk. Fritzinger went by Xhenceval, and Fontaine had taken the lead in the two-litre class - and that was it, more or less. The under-1300 cc race began with a bang: 4 cars were stranded on the starting line, leaving Sauvage, Lambert, Du Soleil and Krémer behind. Hanson in his rapid “RS 1300” Escort took the lead and disappeared into the distance. Championship leader Vernaeve had a difficult weekend; not only Hanson was out of reach, but “Dex” and his Escort were gone too, and to add insult to injury Dutchman van Oorschot and his Spiess NSU completed the podium, with Vernaeve only fourth - one lap behind. He still was in the lead of the championship though. |
