In the shadow of the Matra fight, Alpina entered two CSL coupés, but the main opposition came from the GT’s - the only Capri in the field was a private 1972 car, Ford only tackled the Coupes de Spa curtain raiser this weekend. Niki Lauda raced for three hours in his 3.3 car, beating all GT Carrera’s but not the works prototype. The second Alpina car with a 3.0 engine followed one lap behind, while the Gerstmann Capri had another drama after the engine failure in the Saturday race: when Christmann took over the car from Kautz, the latter one had a remark that the car was not feeling right. That was correct, soon the car crashed into the barriers, rolled and catched fire. Christmann could leave the car in time, only suffering a black eye. |
