The works entries for the DRM this year did not improve track manners, it seemed. But let’s start with qualifying. Fastest was Hezemans, not eligible for points but entered as a support for Menzel, who set second fastest time, followed by Heyer in the lone works Capri. He was followed by Muir in the Alpina car, practising for the 6 hour race, Fritzinger in an ex-works car and Schickentanz in a Kremer Carrera. Next up was Glemser, fastest of division 2. The new 16-valve BMW 2002’s were no match for the Zakspeed Escort. Steckkönig’s Carrera had dropped off the trailer on the way to the Nürburgring, but he was able to finally take the start. Waltraud Odenthal however crashed her Capri with more force - she became a non-starter.

The BMW-Ford-Porsche fight did not take place; there was no works Porsche here (or in any future DRM round - apart from sporadic entries of the baby 935) and the BMW versus Ford fight was over before it had begun really.

The two BMW works cars led after the start, Hezemans in the lead leaving Menzel behind, which was hardly team tactics. Heyer, irritated by the blocking BMW’s after the start, tried to pass Menzel on the inside of Schwalbenschwanz, with predictable results: when Menzel turned in he hit Heyer, who did not leave any room, and both had to retire with damaged cars.

But the race continued, Hezemans in the lead while Muir damaged his car too; after a spin he could continue for a while but since the fuel system had been damaged as well he had to give up. Kelleners gave up with broken suspension.
Hezemans cruised to the finish, Schickentanz came second, Fritzinger third, division 2 was won by Glemser followed by Basche.
Since Hezemans got no points and Schickentanz was not intending to race a full season in the DRM, Glemser was the big winner; 20 points, Basche 15 and Fritzinger 12.
