Mike Parkes was probably thinking of repeating his Imola victory - he was fastest in practice, while Schickentanz was second.
The start of the first heat saw Schickentanz in the lead, followed by Ballot-Lena, Ekberg and Haldi - Parkes had a bad start as well as a puncture, then his car stopped after lap 5, was brought back into life but retired finally in lap 19. Keller retired too, with a broken gear lever. Schickentanz had an easy victory.

Heat two sent only 16 cars away, and saw Schickentanz win once again. Ekberg dropped back to fourth with only fourth gear available, just saving his podium position overall.
