First on track were the 500’s, led by Nucci, and he seemed to walk away with the race given the early retirement of Ciardi, but after only 4 laps his engine gave up and first place was taken by "Giorda"; but he ran into trouble as well, so Lavazza took over and won. Next race (600, 700 and 850) was led by Valerio, followed by Biselli and Bernero, while "York" was able as usual to enjoy himself in the middle of the bigger cars. "Gin Tonic" was in command of the 600s, ahead of Martino. But Valerio was unlucky again, having to retire with a broken injection pump; he was relieved by Bernero, and that was about it; Bernero, “York” and “Gin Tonic” won their classes. Santucci led the 1000 and 1150 away with his Giannini 128, followed by Galmozzi but on the straight Amighini powered his Abarth 1000 past. Six laps from the end, Santucci had to retire while Galmozzi took the lead and won. The most controversial race was the 1300 class; Turizio had been fastest but was 4 kg underweight and had to leave from the last row, together with Galbiati who had been a whopping 21 kg underweight. Bigliazzi and Galimberti took command, but Galimberti’s joy was short-lived when his engine seized. Pozzo had his problems with the former Filipinetti 128 and retired with a broken driveshaft. If this hadn’t been enough, Gagliardi was sandwiched between Turizio and “Tango” with disastrous results, especially for Gagliardi but “Tango” spun as well. The latter dropped back until is was due to be lapped by Turizio, who in the mean time had taken the lead unchallenged. With a few bangs “Tango” removed Turizio from the race in a spectacular series of rolls and jumps. Turizio was furious, of course. In the next race, it was Colzani who was dominant especially after Ruoso had to retire. “Tatog” and had a little fight with “Alval” for overall placement, while Ricci dominated the 1600 class as usual. After a failed attempt and a resulting loss of time, Pozzo led Rossi in the GT race under 1600 cc. Fusar Bassini joined the field from the pits after repairs, ignoring the red light. He was duly blackflagged, and the race ended with Pozzo, Artina and “Poker” winning their classes. It was pretty dark at 19:10 hour. Parkes had to be replaced by Gagliardi, since he was not allowed to start with an English license. Casoni and Gagliardi were leading from the start, followed by Gottifredi, while “Tambauto” had a spectacular spin on the straight. All cars had their headlamps on, and it was really getting dark now - in fact, the surprised competitors were shown the checkered flag after 14 laps (enough to declare the race valid for the Italian championship), with Casoni winning, ahead of the other two Panteras of Gagliardi and Gottifredi. |
