Two Porsche Carrera Prototypes, two works BMW’s and a trio of factory Capris - a massive entry behind the sports cars. Prestige was the only price to be won; one should think the ETCC or the DRM would be more valuable, but the entry list proved us wrong. Like the Nürburgring, the Porsche was far too fast for its touring car opposition. The Jöst car ran out of fuel after Porsche’s calculations proved to be wrong, but the other car ran like clockwork and finished fourth behind two Matras and a Ferrari. The GT honours were a real fight, nine Ferrari Daytonas against eleven Carrera RSR’s. Elford/Ballot-Lena won, a Kremer Carrera second. The touring cars were disappointing; Stuck retired in a sand trap, Hezemans/Quester won the class, 11th overall (behind four GT’s), with brake troubles. Ford had no finisher from its three entries: Glemser/Fitzpatrick/Heyer had ran for 18 hours and were in front of the BMW but than fell victim to a broken valve, just like Koinigg/Vinatier had before. After hardly an hour, Birrell retired - he could not repair a broken distributor. |
