The warm-up race for the tragic Grand Prix seemed to be decided before the flag fell already. Toine Hezemans had brought a works CSL coupé, the same car that had won Spa. Since Akersloot did not manage to hire a works Capri (too many of them were damaged at the Nürburgring), Norbert Wiesmeijer (Alimpo) and Hezemans had a cunning plan: a scheduled stop for a (unnecessary) tyre change. Toine was away first at the start, and came in on lap 2 - and retired on the spot with suspension damage. Akersloot, handicapped by a broken leg, could stay in front of Chiotakis, since the latter still had shifting problems with his Carrera. In the 1300 cc class, Dijkstra could not select first gear at the start, pulled away slowly in second but then got going and after an incredible race he was only a few seconds behind class leader Deen - when his gearbox finally broke. |
