The tricky Zandvoort track, with its uneven surface and its sand, called for testing before the race - last year, the unbeatable Ford team skipped testing and was promptly defeated by BMW. Apart from the track, the Dutch competitors always showed a form quite unlike their performance on other circuits.
So both Ford and Alpina came testing, Alpina even supplying Hezemans with a car for a national race.

The increased pace of the ETCC was demonstrated by Mass, clocking 1.35,4 first than dropping to 1.35,0 , against 1.37,2 for pole in 1971. Soler-Roig and Stommelen (Schnitzer) followed with 1.35,7, the latter one rolling the car in second practice - it was a non-starter for the race. So Hezemans could occupy the front row with 1.35,9. The older second Alpina car was in row 3, after the second Schnitzer car and the private Muir/Miles Capri, who were accused of having more than normal access to Harry Weslake’s engine shops. Next car on the grid was the Dutch BMW coupé, an Alpina car which had all sorts of problems during the Zandvoort national season. Next another two private Capris (the Frami car and Chiotakis’ national championship car) and then the fastest division 2 car, the Escort of Brodie and Berg - which were the only remaining competitive car, the other one (Akersloot’s RS) was a write-off after a crash by Birrell. Division 1 had the normal Autodelta Junior squad in the lead, the fastest Fiat third in class.

The race was led initially by Soler-Roig and Mass, closely followed by Hezemans, but after a few laps the designated winner Mass took over, drove a fastest lap of 1.34,8 - faster than practice on near-full tanks) and opened a gap, helped by Soler-Roig who tried to block Hezemans a few laps. Hezemans then passed and left Soler-Roig behind without too much trouble.

After two hours, the situation was a little different. In the lead were Glemser, followed by Larrousse, Muir/Miles, Fitzpatrick/Stommelen and Lauda, who after a careful start had fought down the Frami Capri as well as Fitzpatrick, only to tangle with an Alfa Romeo, losing a lap in the process. Hezemans had retired but was destined to take over the Lauda car.

Now Stommelen retired, crashing on oil, then disaster struck for Larrousse: ignition failure, out. Mass took over the second car, just in time to get a third of the distance, making the points for position 1 valid. He won in front of Muir/Miles and Lauda/Hezemans.
In division 1, Fiat had an unexpected lead, but when the car started to use much water it dropped back to 4th in class.
