The De Tomaso Pantera proved uncatchable even for the Kremer Porsche 911, just like Monza. In practice, the Müller/Chasseuil was fastest of the GT’s, followed by the second Pantera, the Alpina touring car and the Kremer 911. Disappointing once again the mighty AMG Mercedes, star of last years’ 24h race. Its practice time of 4.14,5 was exactly the same as 1971 and only good enough for 25th overall. The car did not start, Heyer taking a seat in a Porsche 911.

Müller was tenth overall after lap 1, followed by Kremer and Haldi. Pankl had to make a stop with a rough sounding engine, but could continue - only to retire with a broken piston after two more hours. Grauls retired too with a smoking engine. Kremer was the fastest 911, but the two Pantera’s led the GT’s after 2 hours. Unfortunately, Müllers engine exploded two laps from the end, handing victory to their Belgian team-mates. Kremer came second in GT only 3 seconds behind.
