After his French success, Muir went all out to retain his Tourist Trophy in the British round at Silverstone. This time Ford Köln sent two cars, for Mass and Glemser, but all three Capris were outpaced by Frank Gardner in the 5.7-litre SCA Camaro, which was in fact ineligible for European points because it was over 5 litres. However, Gardner was sidelined by a suspension breakage caused by an earlier shunt while lapping a backmarker, and this left Muir, Mass and Glemser battling it out with the Frami Capri driven by Hezemans. The Dutchman dropped back with a puncture, Glemser blew up his engine, and Mass won from Muir who lost time in the pits with a flat battery. in the second two-hour stint, Muir retired after leading again with engine trouble, leaving Hezemans to lead home Glemser, who had taken over Mass's car to win on aggregate. Walkinshaw (Escort) was a surprising third. Fifth overall was the division 1 winner (14 laps in arrears), the Alfa Romeo GTAJ of Facetti/Picchi, as good as claming the makes title, while Mass claimed the drivers’ title here. |
