Prospects for a really grand thrash in the 20 lap fourth round of the Wiggins Teape Paperchase/RAC Saloon Car Championship never materialised as Frank Gardner's SCA European Road Services Chevrolet Camaro ran away from a field headed by Brian Muir in the WT/Gartlan Capri. On his way to a 7.6 second victory in the 5.7-litre Camaro raced by SCA last season, Gardner knocked a tenth of a second off the outright Group 2 record he held jointly with Muir, and left the fastest lap average at 110.68 mph.
After practice it looked as though the battle for the 1301-2000 cc class honours would be a cracker too, but Dave Matthews stayed unruffled to keep his unbroken string of class wins in the Melton Racing/Broadspeed Escort RS, finishing third overall.
Jonathan Buncombe (1.3 Richard Longman Cooper S) and Vince Woodman (1.3 VMW Motors/Broadspeed Escort GT) fought bumper to bootlid for 1001-1300 cc points, but eliminated each other after they collided at Stowe - leaving the class to the Woodhead Shock Absorbers Escort GT driven by Brian Peacock. Surely there's no need to tell you who won the little class?
For those who haven't been attending for the past two years, let's record the fact that Bill McGovern's George Bevan Sunbeam Imp scored maximum points in the sub-1000 cc category to hold on to the joint championship lead with Matthews.
