The second weekend of the Dutch championship only had two touring car races; in both group 1 and 2, all classes started together, providing full grids.
The Group 1 race was dominated by the DNRT, once again. Though the first practice times for Group handed out had some surprises in store: fastest was Gijs van Lennep in a VW 1200 with a sensational time of 1.33,7; Dolk was second fastest with 1.44,7
But the date gave away the clue: April 1!
Vermeulen and Dolk were fastest on the second version of the grid; and they had a little fight until Dolk made contact with the DNRT Commodore, Vermeulen spun and lost 10 seconds, but then Dolk slowed and retired with a damaged tire, a result of the incident no doubt.
Both other DNRT Opels won their class of course, though initially Tom Coronel (recent father of twin boys, named Tim and Tom - future racing drivers) could keep up with his Alfa Romeo. Loek Vermeulen (DNRT) in the smallest class did not win with his Simca - his car refused to run properly, until he used his choke which solved the problem; a second place being the reward. Finally, the 8500 class was won by van Kempen, who had learned his lesson on slipstream finishing.
Group 2 lost one of its attractions at scrutineering; Slotemaker’s BMW was built up as a lightweight CSL which was due to be homologated at April 1. But the cars was not yet produced in sufficient numbers - in fact, the car would only be homologated on November 1. So the plastic windows and aluminium doors were not allowed.
There were more favourites. The new Capri of Chiotakis, Akersloot’s Escort RS and perhaps the ageing Alfa Romeo of Hezemans, and a surprise entry of Engeman in the Kent Capri would provide for some action - though the smaller classes hardly had new cars, apart from a bunch of Daf 55’s.
Akersloot had a troubled practice, so Hezemans in the ex-Chiotakis car was fastest in practice with a tatty-looking but much modified car, with Chiotakis second fastest and Akersloot third. Engeman was a disappointing fourth with 1.43,9, just ahead of Boshuis - the latter by far the fastest in his class, just like Strous should have been in the 1150 class, but he had technical problems and could not set a time. The 1000 cc class had more competitive cars, though none were new at Zandvoort: fastest was Dijkstra in his usual Abarth, Kok with the ex-vd Pol Abarth was second in class, new boy Laqueuille steered an Imp.
Van der Vliet did not start in the fuel-injection Alfa GTAJ, the only one who could have made any sort of impact on Boshuis; team-mate Deen did not have such an engine.
Dijkstra did start, but no one really knew what happened - he followed Akersloot (2 rows in front of him), touched Boshuis and spun towards the armco - he retired on the spot.
Chiotakis had a bad start with too much wheelspin, while Hezemans was not away very quick too. So a big lead for Akersloot, while Chiotakis was now following Engeman - and Hezemans was only seventh. Strous retired with a slipping clutch, handing the lead over to Han Tjan in the Daf. Speets’ brand-new Steyr-Puch (an unusual choice for a 1000 cc class!) battled with Sandvliet in another Daf, until a coming together in lap 9 meant the end of both of them.
Chiotakis meanwhile stormed back to the front, taking the lead in lap 5, but his tires went and he fell back to second on lap 15. Hezemans had retired on lap 9, while Engeman had stopped in lap 7 with handling problems.
So that was about it, Akersloot winning, Chiotakis second, class wins for Boshuis, Tjan and Kok.
